Premier League Jan 2008 Transf

The big transfer of week two was undoubtedly the £15m move that saw Nic Anelka travel from Bolton to Chelsea; I believe that he is the only player of the last 10 years to play for three of the big four - unless anyone can think of someone else? The top clubs are something of a closed market and that is why the striking talents at the teams just below that level are raided so often; Anelka, Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen will always be speculated about whilst they stay out of the elite. Rafa Benitez signed a defender, Skrtel, who sounds like a bad scrabble hand for around £7m, showing that the owners do have faith - even if some of the fans are starting to waver. The desperation at the top and bottom of the league means that speculation will lead to some desperate decisions - including Derby's recruits who are clearly being targeted for next season's promotion push.
