Blackburn Rovers must hate Newcastle United. They stole their prize striker Alan Shearer in 1996, took Graeme Souness from them in 2004 –which turned out to be a bit of a blessing – but now they want Mark Hughes to replace Big Sam. The former Welsh international boss has distanced himself from the vacant post but he remains the bookies’ favourite after Harry Redknapp decided to stay at Portsmouth. Forget potential signings, Blackburn fans will be desperate to retain the services of their young manager.

It has been a terrible week for the Ewood Park club. Coventry City ended their only hope of silverware this season by knocking them out of the FA Cup and now their manager’s future is under threat. However, it hasn’t been all bad news as Robbie Savage has finally left the club, joining Derby County for £1.5 million.

Despite the speculation surrounding Mark Hughes, Blackburn have been linked with a number of top players and a few are thought to be eyeing a way out of Lancashire.

The week started with The Times reporting that Blackburn are in a four-way fight for the services of Marseille striker Djibiril Cisse (07/01/08). The former Liverpool man had a mixed spell in the Premiership at Anfield but he may be prepared to try his luck in England again with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Bolton Wanderers vying for his signature. This story has re-emerged in the Sunday Mirror (13/01/08) with the clubs reportedly looking at a fee of £6.5 million. Staying with forwards, the Daily Mirror claimed that Hughes was interested in signing Turkey and Galatasary striker Hasan Sas (09/01/08), but the club has since distanced themselves from such talk.

Former Aston Villa goalkeeper Peter Enckelman has joined Cardiff City on loan and the Daily Mirror has linked Swiss international defender Bruno Berner with a move to Bundesliga side Cologne (07/01/08).

Finally, with Robbie Savage out of the way, Mark Hughes may be willing to add some more creativity to his midfield and he has been linked with Wigan midfielder and fellow countryman Jason Koumas (Daily Mail 11/01/08). The pair worked together at international level and enjoyed a good relationship and many believe that Hughes could be about to rescue him from his spell at the JJB Stadium.

However, in a recent interview Hughes has stated that although he admires Koumas as a player he insists that he hasn’t made a bid, but for £3.5 million it could be a smart bit of business by Blackburn.
