United moved another two youngsters out in week 3, Febian Brandy was loaned to Swansea, and Ryan Shawcross tempted Stoke to pay £1m for his services. Lee Martin, Jonny Evans, Michael Barnes, Adam Eckersley and Kieran Lee had already been loaned out or released from a now deserted youth team dressing room. As to senior business, the signing of Manucho from Petro Athletico is looking more and more like the only business of the month.

Monday, 14 January 2008
The week started slowly as Manchester United chief executive David Gill repeated his earlier claim that there would be no significant transfer activity at the club this month, according to The Times; don't expect anyone to credit that statement with anything but a slew of speculation.

Tuesday, 15 January 2008
With Heinze gone, Evans on loan and O'Shea repeatedly injured United do have trouble in covering the left back position; Pique could be pushed onto the left but The Daily Mail have some believable speculation that United will move for Hertha Berlin left-back Gilberto (not his Arsenal namesake as some exciteable websites claimed) as cover for Patrice Evra.

Wednesday, 16 January 2008
The transfer speculation has dried up but United hope that Wes Brown has been sufficiently upset by a bid from Newcastle to sign a new deal according to the Daily Star.

Thursday, 17 January 2008
Febian Brandy joined Swansea on loan. The Times covers a speculation piece that has been doing the rounds for months now, in suggesting that United are 'close' to sealing a deal for 17-year-old identical twin defenders Fabio and Rafael Silva, who are both Brazilian youth internationals. Real Madrid desperately try maintain some momentum surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo in releasing some guff about how they will "just have to keep working" on their bid to sign the prolific winger.
Febian Brandy [Man Utd - Swansea] Loan

Friday, 18 January 2008
Ryan Shawcross joined Stoke for £1m - in what could yet be the biggest transfer fee that United are involved in this month.

Saturday, 19 January 2008
The speculation well runs dry, but United labour to a 2-0 win at Reading.

Sunday, 20 January 2008
The Mirror on Sunday place Newcastle as battling it out for Dimitar Berbatov; perhaps in a similar manner to the Wayne Roony deal - perhaps Newcastle will attempt to smoke out the Bulgarian with a pre-emptive bid? But the Daily Star Sunday also has another huge Newcastle deal suggesting that Michael Carrick's general drift towards his birthplace will continue when he signs for £18m. The News of the World are clearly reading too many agents emails, but anyway Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid are all interested in 15-year-old Brazilian 'prodigy' Neymar. Exactly who is descibing him as a 'prodigy'? His mother? There is a new 15-year-old Brazilian sensation every other day at the moment, so nobody hold their breath on this one (Cue email in 2014 - 'how could you not tell that he was going to be the new Pele?').
