Derby County: Transfer Window Jan 2008 - Week 4

Not a week to remember for Derby County and Paul Jewell's 'embarrasment' at on-field performances in the first-half against Sheffield Wednesday and the whole game against Preston has been compounded by frustration in the transfer market.

Roy Carroll of Rangers was announced as a signing earlier in the week but the Scottish club still hold the goalkeeper's registration and will not let him until they have signed a replacement.

Recent loan capture Danny Mills meanwhile looks to have already played his last game for the club after suffering a knee injury and is on his way back to Manchester City.

That does allow the Rams the space to sign another Premiership players on loan before Thursday and they may look to revive interest in Aston Villa's Gary Cahill for whom Martin O'Neill has turned down permanent offers from both Birmingham City and Bolton Wanderers.

A rare piece of good news came as Australian international Mile Sterjovski gained a work permit for his move from Genclerbirgli while Coventry winger Julian Gray was mentioned in despatches as a potential signing.

Veteran full-back Marc Edworthy has been told he can leave Pride Park and may be joined by others in the wake of the FA Cup exit on Saturday where Andy Todd and Claude Davis in particular failed to shine.

It can only get better from now on and the final week of January may prove to be one of the most important in Derby's recent history as a takeover of the club by a US consortium is set to go through.

"One of the reasons I came here was that hopefully there was going to be some American investment coming in," said Jewell after the Preston game.

"I have spoken to the investors so they know it's a tough job."

Jewell is surely safe for the time being despite a desperate start to his reign. Two of his predeccesors were in the news this week with George Burley taking over as Scotland manager and Billy Davies in line either to replace him at St Mary's or become the new Republic of Ireland boss.
