Head to Head
In recent years Manchester United have exerted a firm grip on this fixture; with the only reverse since 2004 being the FA Cup defeat where Alan Smith suffered a nasty broken leg and dislocated ankle in trying to stop a John Arne Riise free-kick. The games between the two have been usually been tight, the last time either side ran away with a game was the 4-0 win to United in April 2003; since then only one game has seen more than a goal separate the teams.

Recent form: Manchester United
Manchester United are not in the best of form - but they are getting results, which at this stage of the season is crucial. Cristiano Ronaldo has scored all their goals in the last four games showing his ability to turn tight matches, despite the opinion of some of the more vapid bloggers. But this is a tough match and United will have to show a little more menace in front of goal if they are to see off a Liverpool side that is unlikely to yield 10 clear chances.

Recent form: Liverpool
Liverpool go into this match in the better form on the back of seven straight wins since the Barnsley debacle. In doing so Liverpool have exhumed thoughts of a late title charge, but the maximum that Liverpool can now manage is 83 points - and one of the top three is almost certain to get more than that. But Liverpool could pick off one or two of the teams above them if this run can see them through the season.
