You have to hand it to Birmingham for thinking big. According to the latest information, the Blues have now tried to interest the last two managers to win the World Cup in taking on the St Andrew’s job.

Birmingham do have a track record in this regard as they did employ England's Sir Alf Ramsay back in the 1970s.

Big Phil Scolari has reportedly followed Marcelo Lippi in turning down an approach from the Davids -Sullivan and Gold. Martin Jol also got a phone call but passed.

The rest of Birmingham’s managerial shortlist should make interesting reading as they appear to be competing for the same targets as England. Presumably Fabio Capello will be next to be approached in this game of Fantasy Manager.

Amazingly, these approaches are taking place at a time when the club’s ownership and future direction are still in doubt - but if its international managers that Birmingham are looking for, there’s one who has just recently become available.
