Two points for Gareth Southgate's men as Middlesbrough struggled in and around the relegation zone; but as these were three fixtures that yielded even less last season this was not a relative disaster.  The draw at home to Spurs was an interesting result; as both teams would have expected a better season; the Bolton game came about a month later than would have been useful and Villa were also in good form.  So perhaps the fixture list was a touch unkind to Middlesbrough.
