Its time for Middlesbrough to take a gamble. Their current forwards are goal shy but signing a top notch goalscorer would be too costly.

This is the time of year when managers have to look at players with potential, or ones who used to have the scoring knack and might get it back again. Darius Vassell falls in the latter category.

At £1 million Gareth Southgate might feel that his former team mare is worth taking a punt on. Vassell can add a bit of zip to the attack although he's never been a heavy scorer, even when he was in the England side.

The former Villa man occasionally scores great goals but is rarely a great goalscorer. However, he can be a direct runner and provider; he's certainly has experience of the Premiership which is lacking at the Riverside at the moment.

Southgate may bring in more than one experienced forward in January in the hope that at least one of them can provide a surge of goals. Long term solutions will have to wait.
