Transfer speculation: Stephen Hunt to Sunderland (2.5m)

As well as the all action hairstyle that is Robbie Keane, Sunderland manager Roy Keane is today linked with a move for dynamic Reading midfielder Stephen Hunt (Daily Star, 03.01.2008).  Hunt was infamously involved in an injury to Petr Cech and likes to play 'on the edge' - which is a spirit that Roy Keane could do with in Sunderland's powderpuff midfield.

The suggested fee of 2.5m for Hunt seems to be decent value - although it is half of the 5m that was being quoted in the papers 5 days ago; clearly another example of the credit crunch.  Given Steve Coppell's avowed dislike of the January window perhaps he will turn off his telephone and fax machine for the duration.  Hunt's drive, goals and confidence in pressure situations like penalty kicks have largely cancelled out the loss of Steve Sidwell (who is probably and unsurprisingly available) - and Coppell would be loathe to lose him.

Reading can't lose too many more players without suddenly hitting a tipping point and given Nicky Shorey's intention to leave (after watching him flounder behind John Utaka yesterday Shorey may not leave quickly) Coppell may not be willing to trade.  The price may be right, but the timing may be wrong.
