According to skysports.com, Lassana Diarra has already agreed his transfer to Fratton Park, but as of this morning (16 January), there has been no official word.

The 22-year old’s lack of first-team football has been an unsettling factor for Diarra at Arsenal and his previous club Chelsea, and he will hope to figure prominently in Harry Redknapp’s team. He will certainly be thrust straight into the action to repair Pompey’s threadbare team.

The French midfielder has impressed at times during his short stay in England, but just wasn’t the polished player that Arsenal and Chelsea needed to challenge at the very top. However, Redknapp certainly knows how to get the best out his players, and it would be no surprise at all if Diarra blossoms and loses those rough edges under the tutelage of Redknapp.

With players queuing up to play that defensive midfield role at Arsenal and Chelsea, it was never easy for him to force his way into the first-team.

At Chelsea, he was handed the task of replacing the master of the role in Claude Makelele and competing against the likes of Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel. At Arsenal, it was much the same story, with competition for places so fierce even seasoned pro, Gilberto Silva, struggled to hold a first-team position.

Diarra has the potential to be a great signing for Pompey, the fee, thought to be approximately £5 million represents good business for Redknapp and the addition of another international player at Fratton Park.
