Transfer speculation: Maxi Rodriguez to Liverpool (Unspecified)

Maxi Rodriguez is heading to Liverpool. That, at least, is what the Daily Mirror would have you believe, a prediction based almost exclusively on the Argentine striker’s friendship with Fernando Torres.  Who needs skill when you’ve got friends like these?

That’s not to put into doubt the player’s talents – although Rodriguez has failed to live up to the early promise – this seems to be a flimsy reason for a player to change clubs, let alone for someone like Liverpool to stump up the cash needed to get him.  Because Rodriguez would cost a lot of money, as you would expect from someone who has just signed an extension to his contract.

And, just as it is hard to see Liverpool paying too much for a 27 year-old winger, it is equally difficult to envisage many fans getting excited by the prospect.  Rodriguez may have scored a brilliant goal at the last World Cup against Mexico, but not much else.  Certainly not enough to prove that he is of the quality to do better than the players Benitez currently has within his squad.
