Transfer Speculation: Brad Friedel to Aston Villa

Martin O'Neill has been nothing if not patient in the transfer market since the day he became Aston Villa manager and, in a move that will once again underline his reputation for canny dealing, is set to land Blackburn Rovers's veteran goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

Having been quoted £10m by Liverpool for Scott Carson and a hefty fee for Paul Robinson, it now looks as though Villa will sign one of the Premier League's most consistent custodians of the last few seasons.

“When Brad told us he wanted to leave, it was a bolt out of the blue – he had only signed his latest contract back in February, and a replacement keeper has not even been on our radar," Rovers chairman John Williams told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.

“It’s an unwelcome situation for us, and particularly for Paul (Ince), who has been concentrating on other targets, as well as assessing our squad and bedding in his new backroom staff.

“We are very keen for Brad to stay but to deny him the move he clearly wants after a lengthy stint with the club is difficult. "

Manchester City are also keen on the 37-year-old but the prospect of being the undisputed number one at Villa Park is likely to see Friedel continue his outstanding career there.

GO BRAD!!! I will love having another Yank on my team!!!
