Everton: Premier League preview and prediction 2008/9

Everton have had a difficult summer. The Kirby stadium plan is back with the authorities, David Moyes has delayed signing a contract, Bill Kenwright has indicated that he will sell and transfer dealings have proved very difficult. The protracted sale of Andy Johnson to Fulham has cost Everton momentum and ready cash, and European teams think that every English side can spend £20m on a defensive midfielder. Everton will start the new season without any new faces and missing a couple of first teamers. Without fresh blood the year-on-year improvements will inevitably falter and the UEFA Cup committment may force Everton as low as eighth.

Last season Everton picked up 65 points, my prediction is that this season could be 10 points lower.

Outs: Lee Carsley (Birmingham City), Stefan Wessels (VfL Osnabruck), Andrew Johnson (Fulham).

RECENT LEAGUE FINISHES Recent league position: 5-6-11-4-17 Recent league points: 65-58-50-61-39

SPREAD BETTING Sporting Index final position prediction: 7th Sporting Index points prediction: 55 - 56.50 points

Sporting Index are also pessimistic about Everton, placing them in the mid-50 point bracket; so a buy will be profitable if Everton get 57 points or more - a mark they have surpassed in the last two seasons.

Example: £10 buy Everton season points at 56.5 Everton get 67 points: You win win £105 Everton get 62 points: You win win £55 Everton get 57 points: You win win £5 Everton get 52 points: You lose lose £45 Everton get 47 points: You lose lose £95 and so on

PREDICTION Finish 8th, 52-57 points
