Tottenham Hotspur: Premier League preview and prediction 2008/9

Spurs have been busy this summer as Juande Ramos reshapes his line-up and quite possibly Tottenham's chances. Some of the signings like Modric, Bentley and dos Santos are very exciting but the sale of fan favourite Robbie Keane means that Ramos will need to have got it right - Spurs fans do have a not entirely unwarranted reputation for fickleness. After the Carling Cup win last season Spurs simply went on holiday and any threats that Ramos made were ignored - so a clear-out was probably necessary but as 7 players have joined other Premier League sides a lot of depth has been cut out of the squad.

Spurs should improve, but regardless of the more hysterical musings out there they are not ready for a 70+ point season - and after last season's 46 points, something closer to 60 points and a fight for a UEFA Cup spot will be a significant improvement.

TRANSFERS TO DATE Ins: John Bostock (Crystal Palace), Heurelho Gomes (PSV Eindhoven), Luka Modric, Giovani dos Santos (Barcelona), David Bentley (Blackburn), Cesar Sanchez (Real Zaragoza).

Outs: Pascal Chimbonda (Sunderland), Paul Robinson (Blackburn), Teemu Tainio (Sunderland), Joe Martin (Blackpool), Robbie Keane (Liverpool). Anthony Gardner (Hull City, loan), Steed Malbranque (Sunderland), Jake Livermore (Crewe, loan), Younes Kaboul (Portsmouth).

RECENT LEAGUE FINISHES Recent league position: 11-5-5-9-14 Recent league points: 46-60-65-52-45

SPREAD BETTING Sporting Index final position prediction: 5th Sporting Index points prediction: 59.50 - 61 points

Spurs are always heavily backed in the markets and Sporting Index have seen them backed into the fifth best team - which looks a little pricey to me. But if you think that Spurs can get 62 points or more then a buy will be profitable.

Example: £10 buy Tottenham season points at 61 Tottenham get 71 points: You win win £100 Tottenham get 66 points: You win win £50 Tottenham get 61 points: You lose lose £0 Tottenham get 56 points: You lose lose £50 Tottenham get 51 points: You lose lose £100 and so on

PREDICTION Finish 7th, 53-58 points

"Spurs should improve, but regardless of the more hysterical musings out there they are not ready for a 70+ point season - and after last season's 46 points, something closer to 60 points and a fight for a UEFA Cup spot will be a significant improvement." - Have you forgotten the two seasons before that? Poor article, basing everything on last season. The odds are what they are because spurs are in the top five teams in the country

Champions league material

Gomes over Robinson will win us 10 extra points next season alone. With a top-class replacement for Berbatov and a holding midfielder arriving at the Lane we will be playing champions league football next year!!!!

Tony

The odds are what they are based on the volumes of cash bet on Tottenham by Spurs fans convinced every season will be the 'one'.

Of course Spurs fans think Spurs will do well - it seems that most of them have placed money on that very idea!
