Transfer Speculation: Ruud van Nistelrooy to Newcastle United

After heading into the new season with some trepidation, the past few days have provided plenty of cause for optimism at Newcastle United.

The signing of Fabricio Coloccini was completed on Friday for a fee of around £10m and the Argentine defender, together with fellow new signings Danny Guthrie and Jonas Gutierrez, performed well in an encouraging opening day display at Manchester United.

Kevin Keegan has continually stressed his belief in the quality of his Newcastle squad and the contrast between this season and last season's games at Old Trafford could not have been more marked.

Now, from the North-East, comes news of an ambitious bid to sign Ruud van Nistelrooy from Real Madrid and bring the prolific Dutchman back to the Premier League.

Madrid have said no for now but the Sunday Sun newspaper suggests that after the signings of Gutierrez and Coloccini, Newcastle will continue to shop in Spain before the transfer deadline arrives in two weeks time.

Another Marid striker, Javier Saviola, together with Real Mallorca's highly-rated Oscar Trejo, are the names in the frame for a move to St James's Park.
