Wigan Athletic: Premier League preview and prediction 2008/9

Another busy summer for Steve Bruce has shaped a squad that looks well capable of improving on last season's 14th place finish - especially given the restricted transfer budgets available to the majority of the mid-table sides as the credit crunch feeds into the Premier League. Wigan are often considered to be newcomers in the division but this is now the fourth consecutive season in the top flight for them - a longer recent series than say, West Ham or Sunderland, can boast.

cattermole looks a good prospect and a couple of Birmingham players have followed their old boss adding to a decent squad. Wigan should add a few points to last season's 40, and move up a couple of places to twelfth.

TRANSFERS TO DATE Ins: Amr Zaki (Zamalek), Olivier Kapo (Birmingham), Daniel de Ridder (Birmingham), Lee Cattermole (Middlesbrough).

Outs: Andreas Granqvist (Groningen), Julius Aghahowa (Kayserispor), Salomon Olembe (Kayserispor), Josip Skoko (Hajduk Split), David Cotterill (Sheffield United).

RECENT LEAGUE FINISHES Recent league position: 14-17-10-22-27 Recent league points: 40-38-51-44*-36*

SPREAD BETTING Sporting Index final position prediction: 15th Sporting Index points prediction: 41 - 42.50 points

Sporting Index are expecting Wigan to move on a point or two from last season which could be a little low as Wigan have spent, relatively, heavily. A buy will be profitable if Wigan get 43 or more points.

Example: £10 buy Wigan Athletic season points at 42.5 Wigan Athletic get 53 points: You win £105 Wigan Athletic get 48 points: You win £55 Wigan Athletic get 43 points: You win £5 Wigan Athletic get 38 points: You lose £45 Wigan Athletic get 33 points: You lose £95 and so on

PREDICTION Finish 12th, 43-48 points

I think you'll find that West Ham were promoted the same season as Wigan
