Juande Ramos: Time to sack the Spaniard

Tottenham were tipped by all and sundry to break into the top four this season but after just four games of the new campaign they find themselves rooted at the foot of the Premiership.

Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Aston Villa have all turned over the North London giants, with the only point of the season coming against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. However, Tottenham's poor run of form goes back well in to last season. They have won only six Premier League games this calendar year and kept just seven clean sheets in the same period. But because Ramos delivered the Carling Cup the fans were willing to give the Spaniard time to get to grips with his players and the English game. Their form in pre-season was breathtaking and many were expecting a great season down at the Lane, but it hasn't panned out that way at all and long suffering Tottenham fan Tony Bellew, and he isn't alone in this view, believes that Ramos has two games to save his job at Spurs.

"Ramos is not the right man for the job. Being honest, Ramos won the Carling Cup last season with Martin Jol’s team. In fairness the Carling Cup was always going to be won by Spurs. Martin Jol had the makings of a good team. Ramos didn’t do a lot to develop the team as it were. You could see that from every game after they won the Carling Cup. Champagne or no champagne, Tottenham had no heart to play as a team once they knew they were in the UEFA Cup.

"I honestly think that if Tottenham don’t get any sort of a result against Wigan then Ramos may look for another job. Jol’s record speaks for itself. He’s managing a team that are now sitting top of the league now. Ramos bottom of the league with one point. Think about it?

"I think Ramos is also playing a lot of players out of position. Not to mention the fact that he should have played Bentley and Jenas from the start against Aston Villa."

Tottenham recorded their first win of the season on Thursday night against Wislaw Krakow in the UEFA Cup, but Ramos's decision to rest players against Aston Villa ahead of the European clash has enraged Tony.

"That was an absolute disgrace. No ambition whatsoever. People who go to see these games, ie season ticket holders/fans want to see their best players."

When you consider all the factors that make up a great football club Tottenham Hotspur have it all in abundance. They have a fantastic stadium, a large and passionate fanbase, an internationally respected manager and a squad of top class players. It's no wonder that the fans expect to be challenging for honours year in, year out. However, much to the amusement of football fans up and down the country, the club can never seem to meet their fans' expectations. But, Tony, who believes the Tottenham board is also to blame for the current slump, insists that radical changes will have to be made at the club in order to realise the fans' dreams.

"From my time as a season ticket holder with Spurs, I always figured that challenging for the top four would be a struggle for Tottenham, but to be fair Tottenham were always a feeder club for the big European clubs. Once Kanoute left that was the start of it for Tottenham. If you look at the recent records of finances within clubs, and buying and selling players, Tottenham have always worried more about making profits, or balancing the books. If I had my way the board at Tottenham would be sacked."

Some people will be reading this thinking: "Hold on. Ramos has brought a lot of new faces to the club over the summer. Surely they need time to become accustomed to their new surroundings." Internationals like Luka Modric, David Bentley, Vedran Corluka, Gomes, Pavlyuchenko and Giovani have all arrived at the Lane while the likes of Paul Robinson, Pascal Chimbonda, Malbranque, Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov have left for pastures new. It's bound to take some time for the players to strike up an understanding, but Tony believes that Ramos's decision to buy foreign names and throw them together is not the way to get success.

"Honestly buying in a lot of foreign players without being tested in the Premiership doesn’t make for a good combination of players. Given Arsene Wenger and Alex Ferguson’s record with youth they have done very well. Tottenham's young players don’t seem to have any heart to play because, personally I think they listen to the media in the UK too much. People expect Tottenham to be doing well because of the players they have bought. In an ideal world this would be the case but Tottenham do lack one thing that the fans respect more than anything, a backing staff that is not just worried about profits."

Spurs have their first win under their belt and have a real chance of getting their season back on track on Sunday against Wigan, but Steve Bruce's men are going to be no pushovers. The Latics have been a revelation so far this season and Zaki could turn out to be the signing of the century. Tony, who believes that Robbie Keane will regret the day he joined Liverpool, thinks Wigan will prove to be a tough test and is hopeful of getting at least a point from the game. However, all the pressure will be on Spurs to get a result and that is never good for a team still getting to know each other. But with a trip to crisis club Newcastle in the Carling Cup in midweek, followed by a trip to Fratton Park next weekend, Juande Ramos knows that Spurs must get something from the Wigan game or the calls for his head will only continue to grow.

Juande Ramos is the right man for Spurs

* Calling all Spurs fans. Should Daniel Levy sack Ramos or should he be given more time? Who do you blame for the club's poor start to the season? Are the players Ramos has signed good enough for Tottenham Hotspur? We'd love to hear your views on the situation at the Lane.

Sack Comolli not Ramos and the new man for Comolli is Teddy Sheringham

Don´t be thick! Fire Ramos.......and then what? Get ANOTHER manager and wait ANOTHER year....wasting MORE money on players. Jol got three years so I say we give Ramos the same. Stop talking about champions league and lets start supporting the team. Last season we won silverware and got into Europe now lets build on that. (What a bunch of idiots we´ve got at the lane....you never learn)

"Ramos won the Carling Cup last season with Martin Jol’s team" - even the winner was scored by a Ramos signing.

"In fairness the Carling Cup was always going to be won by Spurs". - eh? With Woolwich in the semis and Chelsea in the final? Really? That's "fair"?!!

"Tottenham had no heart to play as a team once they knew they were in the UEFA Cup" - so what about...errr... the UEFA Cup that we were still in at the time?

"Jol’s record speaks for itself. He’s managing a team that are now sitting top of the league now. Ramos bottom of the league with one point. Think about it?" - someone tell him they're not competing in the same league...

"I think Ramos is also playing a lot of players out of position. Not to mention the fact that he should have played Bentley and Jenas from the start against Aston Villa." - suuuure, I'd sack him for that. Fancy dropping Jenas. He fully justified his inclusion against Wisla, of course.

"That was an absolute disgrace. No ambition whatsoever. People who go to see these games, ie season ticket holders/fans want to see their best players." - easy solution here! Give your ticket to someone who'll back the club.

"If I had my way the board at Tottenham would be sacked." - and someone tell him that you don't "sack" a board...

"Personally I think they listen to the media in the UK too much. People expect Tottenham to be doing well because of the players they have bought. In an ideal world this would be the case but Tottenham do lack one thing that the fans respect more than anything, a backing staff that is not just worried about profits." - what the hell's a "backing staff"? Suddenly Tony is an authority, who is inside the minds of our younger players?

"Tony, who believes that Robbie Keane will regret the day he joined Liverpool, thinks Wigan will prove to be a tough test and is hopeful of getting at least a point from the game" - somehow I doubt he is. Another doom-monger who'd be happier to see us lose if it proves whatever his point is meant to be.

when defoe (couldnt get in the team due to too many forwards)was sold berbatov and keane were not stating intentions,
keans signed a new contract may 08 and Man u made noises or tapping whatever you call it........both were offered substantial new contracts money etc
so in hindsight Ramos is not to blame for the sequence of events

All the players are aware of the task and this article insults and is out of context.....the club has professional staff.new training regime etc..poyet is linked as a manager to newcastle in the media!

ramos deserves time and spurs should not be pressured by the media to knee jerk decision on his status.a matter of months is not enough to judge anyone......he has not been at the club for one year yet!!

tactically....the team needs a consistent shape and movement which becomes second nature for all the players......malbranque was a mistake.....all the new players are
international players!.
bents attitude has been an example when everyone are letting of
opinions etc

ramos is well respected in the game so who could replace him?

all these articles dont show focus .but is a distraction.......
even hoddles remarks are untimely.......too many chiefs knowing the answers........

whatever the issues are stabilty and consistency in structure is key

Christopher Tanousis

I couldnt disagree more! As a manager Ramos has proven pedigree and given the same circumstance of losing their top two strikers, any manager Ferguson and Wenger included would struggle, especially when you dont have a board who would say 'we just got £50mil, how much was Villa/Owen/Robinho'.

Moreover this article is flawed in your hailing of Jol (whom I too was a great believer in, but not to the condescending of Ramos), but it was JOL who got rid of Kanoute due to 'bad attitude', so why knock Ramos over Berbatov?
Furthermore, you put down the foreign legion 'unproven in the prem' but Berbatov himself was a newcomer, he just fitted the glove as he has Keane beside him. So you can't knock this either.

Finally, Jol would not have got us to the final or the Carling Cup podium. We surrendered a two goal lead and then lost 3-1 away to a much more inexperienced Arsenal. So that argument falls flat also.

I dare not utter the word 'fickle' but I will say that you should have some faith in the squad and the team; and most importantly in Ramos.

Ryan Williams

This a good article. Everyone was booing Jol when he had a poor start to the season yet he had a much better start than we have this year.

Also, Jol established us as a top 5 club who challenge the top 4. Now we have appointed Ramos, who has 0 experience in the english league and is struggling as a consequence.

How many times has Ramos played Bentley (our best right winger) on the left and Giovanni (our best winger on the right/ or even on the bench). People still have blind faith in this man - these same people who were calling Jol tactically inept.

If tactically inept means finishing 5th and challenging for champs league, then what does fighting relegation and finishing mid table mean? To these silly "jol out" supporters - this relegation battle must mean we "have a genius in charge".

They need to wake up or start supporting Newcastle(the blind faith supporters).

Come on Spurs, we need to get our heart back - a striker would not go a miss either.

"In fairness the Carling Cup was always going to be won by Spurs. Martin Jol had the makings of a good team."

Rubbish

Jol was far too negative to win a trophy. You only have to look at his approach against Arsenal and Chelsea vs that of Ramos a season later.

Jol - take a narrow lead and then sit on it despite the defence not being very good and the opposition attack being very good
Ramos - take a lead and try to extend it rather than sit back and defend.

And the German league is nowhere near as good as the Premiership. Just look at European competition for proof of that.

YEAH LETS SACK THIS BLOKE LIKE WE SACKED JOL, GRAHAM,HODDLE, ARDILES,VENNERS,PLATT,SHREEVES AND THE REST.UNTILL WE GET A BOARD THAT WANTS MORE THAN INSTANT SUCCESS AND IS WILLING TO LISTEN TO THE COACH/MNGR THEN WE WILL BE A FEEDER TO MANURE,THE CHEVS OR THE FILTH (AFTER BLEEDING THE BUBBLES OF THEIR GOODUNS.OUR FEEDER CLUB?)SUCCESS TAKES TIME,THE LAST TIME I SAW OUR BELOVED SPURS WAS IN 1992 IN A SEAT IN THE MEMBERS/SEASON TICKET HLDRS,IF THE THE PEOPLE WHO RUN THIS CLUB SPENT TIME TO TALK TO THESE LOYAL SUPPORTERS INSTEAD OF HAVING JOBSWORTHS TELLING U TO SIT DOWN,(SORRY IT WAS 1992-AND I WAS ON HOLIDAY FROM AUSTRALIA)THEN MAYBE THERE IS HOPE OTHERWISE ITS THE CHAMPIONSHIP SOONER RATHER THAN LATER.WHILE FOOTBALL IS A BUSINESS INSTEAD OF THE PEOPLES GAME (WE EMIGRATED AFTER THE DOUBLE - I WAS 10)WE WILL BE ALSO RANS BECAUSE LEVY AND CO DONT UNDERSTAND IF YOU HARNESS THE PEOPLE THEN YOU HARNESS THE POWER,AS A SPURS FAN I BELIEVE THAT SPURS HAVE MORE POWER THAN THE REST OF THE EPL.OUR BOARD LACKS THE VISION TO UNDERSTAND THIS. WAITING FOR THE ABUSEHARVEY FROM AUSTRALIA.....

I don't think everything have to be pointed at Ramos, after all Camolli is the 1 in charge for buying players and like you said, Spurs are clubs to make profits not sucsess. Spurs always been and always will be a selling club and that's a fact. How can you buy players that are cup tied and also sell your best players when you clearly have no replacements for them. I think you should give Ramos time as he has a great record as a manager and time will tell.

Chris

What a stupid title!!!!!!!!

SEB

Ramos should be given more time, Levy and Comolli should be sacked or removed from their positions!

David McGuire

You *ARE* having a laugh, right?

Ramos has had, what, ten months in charge (including a close season)...?

One transfer window? (And even that completely disrupted by the Berbatov and Keane transfers?)

And you want to go back to square one already?

Juande Ramos has a proven, excellent track record. He inherited an underperforming team with his confidence shot. Won a cup (Spurs were "always going to win it" were they? Because the track record against Chelsea and Arsenal is, like, SO awesome it was inevitable).

The one sensible thing you pointed out was Martin Jol. He delivers back-to-back fifth places, has a dodgy season, gets the sack, then moves on to Hamburg and has more success. In hindsight, it's easy to say "we shouldn't have sacked him".

Take a tip - it's the same thing now. Constantly sacking the manager is NOT the way forward.

Crawl back under a rock until you have learned some patience, or have something worthwhile to say, will you?

God, I get so tired of being a Spurs fan sometimes...

Rob Modica

NO!!!!

Every season we have the view of grandure. We have not been a successful team for a long time, with a mixture of poor descision making and knee jerk reactions.

Yes we are having a poor start to the season, but with the amount of player turnover you have to expect that. When you look at the top 4 they change 1 or 2 players a season, where our revolving door policy doesnt work becuase we basically have a whole new team every season.

We need consistency on and off the pitch, Ramos to be given time and for the team to settle. I am not saying we will break into the top 4 or what the team will achieve but we will be better.

Time is the key, unfortunantly as spurs fans we have this way of forcing the issue, which in reality doesnt make us much different then the newcastle fans and look what happened to them.

i am a life long tottenham fan and think that tony bellew's comments are disgraceful!
take us back to just under a year and we had won one game from ten; everyone was calling for Jol's head; and everyone was comparing our poor start to the previous successes of Ramos's Sevilla.
and to state that we were always going to win the cup is nothing short of pure idiocy! why had we not done it in the years previous then?
i truly think Ramos has what it takes to make us a stronger club; whether we challenge for UEFA, top four, or either national cup.
a lot of spurs fans need to realise that we are NOT going to break into the top four straight away, these things take time.
bad things will not happen to spurs, and we will never be in disaster zone.
and the comment about Jol's players, tony....Jol didnt buy the players, the board did.

piss off you fool - and we bring in keegan, curbishly? he's won lots of the important games, where Jol would have failed:-
man city with 10 men, portmouth away (when league still mattered Arsenal, cup final,

Souradeep

this is sick....he should stop supporting tottenham....if ramos had done well he wudnt have been saying this....he is either a glory fan or a wannabe.....ramos has got better footballing credentials than you.....he manages the team not you....and there is a reason for that

bob dann

won the uefa cup with jol's team - is that the same one that had 7 points from 11 games and managed to lose two european games home at when our only other european defeat at home was to real madrid back in 1962? get real.

Come on now there is no point of sackin ramos cos then wot start all over agai?, this is the reason we in this mess, ramos is a good manager and he will make us a good time just needs to be given time, and if ya think he made the wrong signings, its not even up to him anyway thats comolis job. the fans make it worse too why boo our own players when they are lackin confidence surely that will just make them worse. i mean think about it

Ashley Knight

Ramos is a good coach, unfortunatly i dont think he has the overall say on player signings, the only thing i feel that has already cost a manager his job is that **** berbatov, even woodgate has said as much, ramos will get it right give him time. COYS

Mark

Utter twaddle.

Greekos

So your saying that you want to sack a manager who has just put his stamp on the team and just needs some time for it to all gel together and come to fuition. Yes we are short of a few players in key positions but so is every club in the Premiership bar Man U and Chelsea. Your right that the club listens to the media to much but that doesn't mean that we should get rid of Levy. My only concern over Levy is that I believe he doesn't give his managers long enough. We always seem to be on the brink and then change manager. He needs to give Ramos at LEAST 3 years to allow for both consistency and stability. Yes Wigan will be a tough game for us but I tell you what sacking Ramos now just means that we get a new manager in and then he changes the team again next season we have yet another year in transition and no silverware. Leave Ramos and the players to it and watch us build a base this season which we can then build and improve on next season no matter what happens. The most important thing this year is to insure that we have European football next season or we dont have a chance in hell of keeping hold some of the players that we currently have and then attracting the ones that we need. IN RAMOS WE TRUST

spurs 4 lyf

bungesliga is a rubbish league the quality is not as goodas the pl. we would kill hamburg if we played them, ramos won the carling cup in his forst try with martin jol's team that shows how good a manager he is ur talking rubbish who will replace him ramos has come in and got benty firing like jol should have of done and jenas is firing lennon is firing they all play better under ramos and anyway when ramos got tottenham we were something stupid like h and where did we finish 12th jol wouldnt have of done that

Roy

Please grow up or post in a comic if you can't write anything intelligent. Childish article.Suppose it might satisfy an infantile ego to write(?) an article on a grown up site.

Tony Bellew

I was right about Wigan.

Tony Bellew

And you's thought I knew nothing about football. come on lads.

choo

RAMOS HAD TURN RUBBISH TO A ELITE TEAM TO CLAIM CARLING WITHIN A YEAR .THESE HAD GIVEN LEVY A FALSE IMAGE THAT SPURS HAS CREDENTIAL IN PROFITING FROM TRANSFERMARKET AND BUY IN GOODBARGAIN AND TRANSFORM THEM .
THEY HAD FELL INSIDE THE INTELLIGENCE TRAP.SO IS MR. TOOSMART TO BLAME.
