Newcastle United vs Blackburn Rovers: Premier League Prediction Panel 2008/9 - previews and predictions

Newcastle welcome a new short term boss in Joe Kinnear, an appointment that has caused more Geordies to say 'you're joking' than if the appointment had been his dead namesake Roy.  Quite how many managers must have been considered before Kinnear's name came up is interesting, but as he was Dennis Wise's manager at Wimbledon it may not be quite as many as some pundits are suggesting.  Even if everyone wants to play Newcastle at the moment Kinnear, who is essentially a retired Championship-level manager, probably can't believe his luck.

Blackburn are another side that like British managers but whereas Newcastle seem obsessed with flights of fancy like Keegan and Shearer, Blackburn go for the more rugged, school-of-hard-knocks appointments like Souness, Hughes and Ince.  Blackburn will miss Paul Robinson who has tweeked a calf but will expect to extend their winning run to three games after narrow wins over Fulham and Everton.

Blackburn will start as favourites, but can Kinnear offer an instant boost?

Spread Betting
In a tight game will Kinnear instill some fighting spirit, and will his players dig in.  Against Blackburn this could be a match with a few bookings in it so it is a bit surprising to see the bookings market set at about four yellows - looks a decent buy price.

Example: 1pts buy Bookings at 42
No bookings: You lose 42pts
2 yellows: You lose 22 pts
4 yellows: You lose 2 pts
6 yellows: You win 18 pts
8 yellows: You win 38 pts
10 yellows and a red: You win 83 pts
and so on
