Transfer Round-up: Sickening Summer for Liverpool

It has been a sickening summer for Liverpool.  What with Javier Mascherano's apparent eagerness to move to Barcelona and Xabi Alonso's determination to move to Real Madrid, Rafael Benitez has found himself battling to hold his midfield together.

Perhaps just as worrying is the fact that so far nothing has been decided despite the fact that the start of the season is edging ever closer.

That would have been fine had the players settled down after an early flirt.  Yet just this week Mascherano's agent has once again said just how much the player hates living ing England - surely his repeated comments have Mascherano's blessing - whilst Alonso's body language is that of a player who wants to leave.

All of which could leave Liverpool facing the potential headache of having to replace either one or both.

It is a possibility for which Benitez is already seems to be planning.  The rumours of a move for Alberto Aquilani have been too persistent for them not to hold any truth.  The Italian playmaker is a class act, if slightly injury prone, and he could fill the void left by Alonso.  David Silva too is a long term target who would give Benitez the options that he's always looking for.

That no names have been mentioned as potential replacements for Mascherano hints that Benitez is less willing to let him go. The only name that has cropped up is Lyon's Moussa Sissoko, but even if there's any truth in that, he's unlikely to be a player to replace him.

Martin Skrtel's injury has opened up another area where Liverpool need to strengthen.  Sylvain Distin's name has been mentioned but with Aston Villa now interested as well his price could baloon.  Something that Benitez might do simply to spite Martin O'Neill.

If there is little sign that the two players that everyone wants to stay will do so, one player who could easily leave Anfield without anyone noticing is still there.  Andrea Dossena is surplus to requirements even with Fabio Aurelio injured but Liverpool have yet to find a buyer.  Juventus toyed with the idea earlier on but now Napoli are interested.  Contact has been made but it now is up to the to offer a decent price for the Italian international.
