Welcome back to the toughest weekly football quiz in the world. A new year is around the corner but I’ve got a funny feeling that your luck in this quiz will not be improving any time soon. I’d love you to prove me wrong. Unfortunately I don’t think you will – well not unless you look at the answers sheet first!
Let’s not waste any more time. Here is question one.

2. Liverpool v Bolton Wanderers: The Wanderers may be one of the Premier League’s top scorers this season but they haven’t scored in their previous six visits to Anfield. Who was the last Bolton player to score against Liverpool in the Premier League? Was it A – Henrik Pedersen? B – Kevin Nolan or C – Jay-Jay Okocha?
3. Manchester City v Blackpool: The Seasiders haven’t left the blue half of Manchester with maximum since May 4, 1963. Can you tell me who top of the pops in the UK singles chart? Was it A – Cliff Richards and the Shadows with Summer Holiday? B – The Beatles with From Me To You or C – Gerry and the Pacemakers with I Like It?
4. Stoke City v Everton: It’s almost 28 years to the day since Stoke last beat Everton on home soil. Who was the Stoke manager who guided them to that 1-0 win in 1982? Was it A – Alan A’Court? B – Alan Durban or C – Richie Barker?
5. Sunderland v Blackburn Rovers: Which Sunderland player was an ever-present for the Black Cats last season? Was it A – Craig Gordon? B – Phil Bardsley or C – Darren Bent?
6. Tottenham Hotspur v Fulham: The Cottagers have an awful record at the Lane. They have lost six of their past nine meetings in north London and you have to go back to August 2003 for their last win. But who scored Fulham’s last goal at White Hart Lane? Was it A – Barry Hayles? B – Clint Dempsey or C – Bobby Zamora?
7. West Ham United v Wolverhampton Wanderers: Both West Ham and Wolves have been captained by two icons of the English game in Bobby Moore and Billy Wright respectively. Between them they represented their country more than 200 times, but who, Moore or Wright, scored the most goals for their country?
8. Birmingham City v Arsenal: The Blues have only beaten the Arsenal once in the Premier League era. That happened in an action-packed game at St Andrews in May 2005. Walter Pandiani put the hosts ahead with 10 minutes to go before Dennis Bergkamp equalised with minutes remaining. But the Blues went up the other end, scored and took all three points, but who was the hero that day for Birmingham? Was it A – Darren Carter, B – Matthew Upson or C – Emile Heskey?
9. Chelsea v Aston Villa: Villa return to the scene of their biggest defeat of last season this weekend. Chelsea put seven past the Villains in March as they stormed to the Premier League title. But who scored Villa’s only goal of the game? Was it A – James Milner, B – John Carew or C – Ashley Young?
10. Wigan Athletic v Newcastle United: Wigan has not been a happy hunting ground for Newcastle over the years. The Mags have never won there in the league. In fact their only win at Wigan came in the FA Cup in January 1954. Who was the British Prime Minister at this time? Was it A – Winston Churchill? B – Clement Atlee or C – Antony Eden?
