Manchester United remain on course for the treble this season but United fan Peter Lee may have four reasons to celebrate come the end of the season as our pundit still leads the Premier League Prediction table. The Red Devil has been the man to catch for the past few months now, but, just like his heroes on the pitch, Peter just can’t put his rivals to bed.
Peter scored an impressive eight points this week – thanks to Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Manchester City and correctly predicting the outcomes of Blackburn v Blackpool, United v Bolton, Wigan against Birmingham and Everton beating Fulham – but the gap at the top has been reduced to just four following Dave Blackburn’s haul of nine for Bolton Wanderers. The Wanderer achieved his points tally by correctly predicting the scores at Blackburn and Everton and predicting wins for Manchester United, Stoke and Chelsea.
Blackpool’s Phil Trow, who has been a long-time challenger for the title, continues to lose ground on the leader. He only managed six points this week and is now seven points adrift from the top.
But the top scorer this week was Squarefootball’s very own Portsmouth fan Peter Rendle. The Fratton Park diehard from down under recorded 12 points this week and has allayed any fears of relegation by soaring up the table. Peter correctly predicted three scores this week; Chelsea beating City 2-0, Everton beating Fulham 2-1 and Wigan’s 2-1 win over Birmingham, along with correct results for Blackburn, Manchester United and Liverpool.
He was closely followed by West Ham United fan Nigel Telfer. The Hammers have made great strides in recent weeks on the pitch and Nigel’s tally of 11 has helped him follow his heroes out of the drop zone. Nigel was one of just six pundits who tipped The Irons to draw at White Hart Lane and was the only one to tip West Brom and Arsenal to draw 2-2.
Other high scorers this week include myself with 11 and Arsenal’s Don McMahon, although I’m sure Don would have rather forsaken his points haul for an extra Arsenal goal last weekend.
At the other end it is not great news for the current champions Chelsea. Joe Tyler could only manage three points and is rooted to the foot of the table on 144 points. He is now 11 points adrift of our very own Middlesbrough fan Sue Gardener and Aston Villa’s Lynette Ranson with just eight weeks left to play. Lynette has more reasons than most to be concerned with the threat of a double relegation hanging over her head, but can Houllier’s men turn it around on the pitch? Many don’t believe they can with the Frenchman in charge so Villa Park will be an interesting place between now and the end of May.
Finally, Blackpool’s Phil Trow remains on course to pick up something for his endeavours this season as he still leads the correct scores chart. Phil is now on 36, but Manchester United’s Peter Lee is on 33 and Arsenal’s Don McMahon and Bolton’s Dave Blackburn are both on 32. However the Bolton fan has lost his place at the top of the correct results chart by his title rival Peter Lee. The Manchester United fan is now on 110, one ahead of Dave on 109, closely followed by Villa’s Lynette Ranson on 107.
