Will Rooney or Van Persie win the Golden Boot?

Bookmark and Share

The Golden Boot was shared last season between Manchester United’s Dimitar Berbatov and Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez with 20 goals apiece, but who will be the top marksman in this season?

The bookies believe the accolade will remain in Manchester with United’s hot Mexican sharpshooter Javier Hernandez best priced at 17/2 at Bet Fred and Totesport and his colleague Wayne Rooney at 9/1 at William Hill.

Chicharito marked his first season in England with 13 goals in the Premier League and everyone seems to believe he will score even more this season. Rooney endured a frustrating season last year following a string of off-the-field incidents but he still managed 11 goals in the league. With his new hairdo firmly attached, his private life relatively calm and England team-mate Ashley Young providing him with ammunition, Rooney is expected to rediscover his scoring boots.

Next in the list to be crowned the Premier League’s top goalscorer is Arsenal’s Robin Van Persie. The Flying Dutchman ended the season in a flurry of goals and finished the campaign with 18 goals to his name. If he can stay injury free, at 10/1 at William Hill, the Arsenal striker could be worth a shout.

Chelsea’s Fernando Torres is also rated at 10/1 at Victor Chandler. The former Liverpool man cost Roman Abramovich £50 million in the January transfer window but has only returned the Russian billionaire’s faith in him with one goal so far. The Spaniard has not looked the same player since before last year’s World Cup, but he is bound to rediscover his form sooner or later as the guy is pure class. Chelsea will always supply him with chances. The big question is, can he finish them?

Aston Villa’s Darren Bent is next at 12/1 with a string of bookies. Bent cost Villa more than £20 million in January but showed he was worth every penny by helping to keep the Villains up. He was the highest scoring Englishman in the league last season with 17 and with Charles N’Zgobia, Albrighton and Bannan setting him up in front of goal you’d have to fancy him to be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.

The list then goes all South American with Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez at 14/1, and City’s new Argentine striker Sergio Aguero at 16/1. Suarez looked superb following his move to Anfield and Liverpool’s hopes of success this season lay with him. It would be a risk putting money on Tevez as he claims he doesn’t want to be in Manchester anymore and it remains to be seen whether Aguero can cope with the physical nature of the English game.

Liverpool’s £35 million hitman Andy Carroll is 20/1 alongside Chelsea ace Didier Drogba, both could well be worth a punt, while Berbatov is 25/1 alongside City’s madman Mario Balotelli.

West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie, who marked his debut campaign in England with 15 goals, is 66/1 at Bet365.
