Arsenal: How much is Aaron Ramsey worth?

Bookmark and Share

Arsene Wenger shelled out a club record £42 million in August to bring German international Mesut Ozil to the Emirates, but the former Real Madrid man is being shown up by his Welsh team-mate Aaron Ramsey.

The former Cardiff City midfielder returned to his former club yesterday and came back to haunt them, scoring twice in a 3-0 win for the league leaders. Those goals took his tally to 13 goals in 21 appearances in all competitions this season. So the questions begging to be asked is; Just how much is Ramsey worth on the current transfer market?

Arsenal signed Ramsey in the summer of 2008 for £5 million. Arsene Wenger knew he had potential and believed he was the right man to bring it out of him. It's taken five years to see the best of Aaron Ramsey but what a player he has become. The 22-year-old always looked comfortable in possession, was a wonderful passer of the ball and a great tackler. He had all the skills needed to be a quality footballer. But now he has added confidence and goals to his game, Ramsey looks a world beater.

The Welsh captain is arguably the first name on Wenger's team sheet at the moment. The boy can do no wrong. Yet it could have been so different for the youngster following his horrific leg break at Stoke. Many thought his career was over after Ryan Shawcross snapped him in half. Ramsey probably did too. But not only has he worked his way back to fitness, he is looking even better than ever. Last season Ramsey's form drew criticism from the Arsenal fans and some even wanted him out of the club. Not now. Ramsey has come back stronger mentally and physically and his contribution could be the defining factor when silverware is being handed over this season.

With eight Premier League goals in 12 starts to his name, Ramsey has overtaken Olivier Giroud as the Gunners' top goalscorer. He has also set up four goals alone in the top flight. But it's not just domestically than Ramsey is excelling himself. Even in the Champions League he has been the man to watch.

Ozil has had a hand is as many Arsenal goals in the league as Ramsey (four) but is lagging behind with only two goals to his name. While Jack Wilshere has scored twice but made only one goal.

Ramsey is clearly Wenger's most valuable player this term, but how does he compare to those in Europe. He has a long way to go to catch Ronaldo. The former Man United man has scored 17 goals in14 league games and created three, while his Welsh colleague and most expensive player in the world Gareth Bale has scored four in eight and created five. Not bad for a player who has been dogged with injuries and missed out on a proper pre-season.

So Ramsey still has a bit to go, but Christ he's only 22 and has about 14 seasons ahead of him. He's incredibly happy with life at the Emirates and I can't see him going anywhere any time soon, but the likes of Madrid are sure to be casting admiring glances at Ramsey if he keeps up this form. So, with that in mind, what valuation would you place on his head?

Arsene Wenger insisted that Ramsey is worth more than £50 million and wouldn't entertain any offers following years of having to sell his best players. He wants to keep this squad together for as long as possible and if they can end their trophy drought this season then the past eight or nine barren years will be forgotten about. They are in a strong position on and off the pitch, but having seen Gareth Bale leave England for £85 million, what sort of figure would need to be mentioned before you thought it was a good deal to offload him?

* Calling all Arsenal fans: How much do you think Aaron Ramsey is worth? He has everything going for him right now and he is still only 22. How many millions would it take for you to even consider selling Aaron Ramsey? Whatever your view, we'd love to hear from you.
