Manchester United: Can Moyes bring former Arsenal captain Fabregas to Old Trafford?

Manchester United have made a £25 million bid for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas in an attempt to bring him back to the Premier League, but after missing out on Barca's Thiago Alcantara to Bayern Munich will David Moyes convince the former Arsenal captain that his future rests at Old Trafford?

The Red Devils were firm favourites to land the much lauded Thiago, but that deal was not to be. The lure of Bayern Munich, and more importantly Bayern’s new manager Pep Guardiola, proved to be United’s undoing in this transfer saga.

David Moyes has clearly identified the United midfield as the area to fortify, and with that view in mind, has decided to pursue his initial target, former Arsenal midfielder and captain Cesc Fabregas, who also plies his trade at the Nou Camp.

FabThe Spaniard certainly possesses all the qualities needed to solve United’s midfield woes and United have lodged a bid in the region of £25 million, as reported by several prominent British newspapers. The question still remains: will £25 million be enough to persuade Barcelona to part with the European and World Cup winner?

Fabregas's former club Arsenal have first refusal on the player, albeit with a £25 million price tag on his head, and Arsene Wenger has always been an admirer of his former captain. Even with the long drawn out transfer saga that lead to Fabregas leaving North London to return to his boyhood club, Wenger refused to speak ill of his star man. So Arsenal may be another hurdle for United to overcome in this battle.

Reports claim Fabregas does not want to leave the Catalan giants, but is prepared to return to the Premier League if Barcelona accept a bid for him. It also appears that Fabregas himself may favour a move to United where he would link up with former Gunners hitman Robin van Persie. What a kick in the teeth that would be for Arsenal fans.

After intense pressure from Barcelona, Arsenal eventually struck a deal to let Fabregas return home for a fee of £30 million. United have entered the bidding below that mark. Will Barcelona be willing to accept a £5m hit on the player they pursued so ruthlessly, particularly as they have just let Thiago leave? Will United go back in with a higher offer, forcing the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City to enter the fray? Could the arrival of Fabregas signal the end of Wayne Rooney's time at Old Trafford?

Only time will tell...

Calling all Manchester United fans: How confident are you that David Moyes can convince Cesc Fabregas to sign for United? Do you think his arrival may lead to Wayne Rooney's departure to Arsenal? What do you think Fabregas would bring to your midfield? Whatever your views, we'd love to hear from you.
